Ashes of Problem Students

I saw this today...

and I've decided that I think I neeeeeeeeeeed it.

Although - my wonderful students would probably just knock it off of my desk and shatter it into a thousand little pieces - which seems to be the latest trend.

The only problem is that I'd need a pretty big jar to fit all the ashes I'd need to have in there.

Especially for my lovely, darling "K" who thinks it is HILARious to do things when he thinks I'm not going to see him.

Things like...pulling his shirt up over is head...standing up and dancing a jig...sneaking candy out of his pocket and showing it off to everyone around with manic eyes and a creepy "I've got forbidden candy" grin...running to the water fountain and sneaking a drink (1. he sits near the sink - but 2. I can TOTALLY hear the water as soon as he turns it on)... and my personal favorite ... seeing him standing up in his chair, shaking his booty (and I mean shaking it) and the look on his face when he realized he was caught.

I mean I just don't get it. He either gets caught red handed by me or everyone in the class turns on him and rats him out.

Sometimes when it is just too much for one day/week/month/YEAR - I have one of those "Do I laugh or do I cry?" moments. And I have to choose to laugh (with my head turned away of course) ...which just gives him another "get up and shake it" moment.

It's a vicious, vicious cycle.

It seems like every class has one of these students that just likes to be the center of attention! I remember that we had a guy by the name of Mark that would do just about anything to make the rest of the class laugh. One time he brought a little wind up timer to class and was showing it off. The teacher made him put it away and no sooner than he put it in his pocket, it went off and of course the whole class burst into laughter. Like you said, the teacher didn't know whether to laugh or cry so she chose to laugh to herself and took the timer away. She probably had quite a collection of things like that by the end of the year,

I have to agree with you..it is so hard not to let them see you laugh. I know I royally screw up sometimes when I'm in there and loose it, but they are sooo funny. You have to love them!

I have a laugh-despite-myself moment this week.
1st grade student-let's call her A'R (because of course it has an apostrophe)says: do you know my Momma's name?
me: (thinks-because I probably should know it) no.
A'r: it's (whatever she said-the actual name's not important)
me: okay
A'y: but everybody calls her Boobie.
(entire class busts out with "eeewww... nasty...... snickers")
Me: speechless trying to figure out how to keep from laughing.
A'y: looks at kids and says Don't laugh...I gotta uncle named Butt!
me: busting out laughing cause I got nothin to contain this situation at this point.

Words of Wisdom

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some are broken, some are whole, some have weird names, and all are different colors.... but they all learn to live in the same box.
