Kid Funny

Today we read The Tale of Peter Rabbit in class to kick off our Author Study of Beatrix Potter.

While reading, the kids became quite engrossed in the story and concerned for the welfare of dear Peter Rabbit who disobeys his mother and goes into Mr. McGregor's garden after she tells him to stay out of there because - get this - Mr. McGregor made a pie out of Peter's father for doing the same thing.  ...  *(I know right?!!?  WTF kind of children's story is this?!?)  Moral:  Don't disobey your mother or else you'll die and get made into a pie.  Sweet Jesus.  What a tragic story.  ;)

Anyways...

You could hear a pin drop when Peter was eating all the vegetables and wandering around the garden.

Well lo and behold who does he run into but Mr. McGregor.

When I read:

Mr. McGregor was planting young cabbages but jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, "Stop thief!"

From the far back corner of the carpet I hear - "oohhhhhhh snaaaaaap"  from "J" with eyes as big as saucers, serious as can be.  So into the story that he didn't even notice me seek him out and shake violently as I tried to hold in my LOL and continue on with the drama of the story.

Who knew Peter Rabbit was such a suspenseful, edge of your seat story?

Not me.

But it is my new favorite.

*All in jest - I really do love this classic piece of children's literature!  Even if it is tragic.

That is too funny, I can see them all sitting there engrossed in the story.

You are so right about some of these children's stories being violent. It's enough to give these poor kids nightmares. But they are classics and fun to read. I can just hear you know who saying "Oh Snap!"

Hey I have a super violent version of Snow White if you ever want to do a follow up on the whole gory fairy tale thing...

LOL - yeah apparently all of the Beatrix Potter stories have a bit of a violent twist in them...dogs and a fox fighting to the death...a father beating his kids... you know the norm.

M - I think I'm good on crazy tragic fairy tales for a while...Snow White...*shakes head*

You know, I didn't realize all her stories had endings like that. I mean poor Jemima and her eaten eggs, Benjamin with his whipping, Jeremy Fisher getting swallowed by a fish. Makes you wonder what was wrong with good ole Beatrix!

Not to mention that Jemima was sent out to get the ingredients to cook herself in. Talk about mental torture. Although she was stupid enough to not know what she was getting... Great messages to kids! The Flopsy Bunnies - talked about smoking tobacco and skinning the bunnies and cutting off their heads! (I didn't read that part.) Yeah I'm thinking something was definitely wrong with her -not to mention the people who published the stories!

Words of Wisdom

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some are broken, some are whole, some have weird names, and all are different colors.... but they all learn to live in the same box.
